Next Healthy Eating Seminar: Mid Week Meals
Posted by kathryn in Clinic News and Nutrition

- Date: Saturday 4 September
- Time: 3.00pm – 4.30pm
- Cost: $25
Cooking at home is one of the best ways to ensure you’re eating a healthy diet. However, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut, repeating the same old recipes week-in and week-out. Alternatively in the rush of daily life food can get pushed to the bottom of the list – meaning you end up eating take-away.
Are you fed up with this and want to find better ways to plan, prepare and eat healthy food? In this seminar Kathryn will talk about the basics to keep in your pantry, how to plan and cook for the week and some easy recipes you can incorporate into your routine.
Session includes:
- a cooking demonstration
- notes and recipes
- tastings of the food and recipes being discussed
- a glass of wine on arrival
Spaces are limited, so bookings are essential. To find out more contact Kathryn by email.

Dinner in 30 Minutes: Schedule
Posted by kathryn in Nutrition
If cooking is a chore and you’re bored with what you’re making, then you need some new ideas. Dinner in 30 Minutes is a series of 30 minute lunch-time cooking classes, where you learn how to make one new recipe. A dish which is healthy, easy, delicious and which can be cooked in under thirty minutes.
Each session includes a cooking demonstration, take-home recipe sheet and (of course) tasting the dish. The classes cost $10 and bookings are essential, as spaces are limited.
August 26 12.30 – 1.00pm – North African Chicken
This is a flavour packed dish which can be made in one pan, keeps really well overnight in the fridge and can also be frozen. The chicken is cooked in a rich, spiced, and vegetable spiked tomato sauce and yes it can be made in less than 30 minutes. An easy vegetarian variation will also be discussed.
September 30 12.30 – 1.00pm – Spring Vegetable & Lentil Pasta
A beautiful dairy-free pasta dish, flavoured with fresh mint, capers and lemon. It includes plenty of vegetables and a good serving of protein, from the lentils. It is more work than opening a jar of supermarket-bought sauce, but not a lot more. But it is so much more nutritious and healthy than a jar of sauce. I’ve kept the vegetable chopping to a minimum and the sauce cooks while the pasta is boiling.
October 28 12.30 – 1.00pm – Spiced Lamb Balls with Couscous
Fragrant and spicy lamb balls, which are easy to put together and take only about 10 minutes to cook. Plus there are several different ways you can vary this meal, to suit your appetite and tastebuds. In this session I’ll be demonstrating how to make the basic lamb balls and showing you how to make them into a number of different meals.
November 25 12.30 – 1.00pm – Fish Cakes with Ginger and Coriander
These Thai-esque fish cakes are easy to make and a delicious, useful and flexible food. You can have them with salad or rice and a pile of stir-fried vegetables. Alternatively if you’re after some pre-dinner nibbles or a light entree for a dinner party, these would be great served with a sweet and hot chilli sauce. I’ll also be showing you how to make a Hot and Tart Cucumber Salad to accompany the fish cakes.

How to book
- At Balance2health, our Pilates Class vacancies are for the exclusive use of current term paying members.
- This system is not to be used to switch from the class for which you have made a term booking, to another class on the timetable. Instead vacancies are for the convenience of members who have missed their usual class.
- Make-up classes cannot be carried over to a new Term, or to Holiday Classes.
- Current members who wish to book into a vacancy need to email Alexia to book. Do not simply turn up to the class.
- Spaces are allocated on a first-email-first-serve basis.
- Although make-up classes are often possible during the term, they can only be offered if current class members let us know in advance when they’re unable to attend their usual class – this does not always happen.
- To book yourself in email Alexia at alexiaam@optusnet.com.au
- If you are doing an extra class, the discounted fee of $16 is to be paid in cash at your class.
Dinner in under 30 minutes
Posted by kathryn in Clinic News and Nutrition

If cooking is a chore and you’re bored with the dinners you make, then you need some new ideas. From the end of July Kathryn will be running monthly 30 minute lunch-time cooking classes.
At each session you’ll learn how to make one new recipe. Something you can make at home. A meal which is healthy, nutritionally balanced, but also delicious and only takes thirty minutes to make.
July 29 – Fish in Yoghurt Sauce
In July’s session the Dinner in 30 Minutes recipe will be an easy way to cook fish – White Fish in Yoghurt Sauce.
Fish is a low fat food, full of protein, iodine and other nutritional goodies. I regularly recommend eating more fish to many clients. However many people don’t feel confident using and cooking fish.
July’s Dinner in 30 Minutes recipe includes a spicy, tangy yoghurt sauce and plenty of vegetables. It’s a really simple way of cooking fish, that still has stacks of flavour.
An easy vegetarian variation will also be discussed.
The session includes a cooking demonstration, take-home recipe sheet and (of course) tasting the dish.

- Thursday 29 July
- 12.30pm – 1.00pm
- Cost: $10

Is middle-aged weight gain inevitable?
Posted by kathryn in Fitness and Nutrition
There’s a great piece on the ABC’s website about middle-aged weight gain. A lot of people think it’s inevitable. There seems to be a widely held belief that as you age there’s a dramatic slowing of the metabolism, which means no matter how hard you try weight gain is going to happen.
But this is not really true. There is a slowing of the metabolism as people age, but it’s relatively slight. What’s more significant in the development of middle-aged spread, is the drop in activity which occurs as we age and our lifestyle changes.
It’s a really well explained article and I’d encourage you to take a look Fact Buster: is the middle-aged spread inevitable?.
